BioHitech America Supports New Massachusetts Food Waste Ban
Legislative Trends Continue To Enforce Eco-Friendly Alternatives To Landfills

CHESTNUT RIDGE, NY – OCTOBER 1, 2014 – BioHitech America, the most innovative and  sustainable solution company for food waste disposal, endorses the Massachusetts commercial  food waste ban which went into effect today. The ban, which is the strictest food-waste  legislation to date, requires that businesses and institutions producing one ton or more of food  waste per week must divert it from landfills.

“With the growing challenges of climate change and depletion of our Earth’s natural resources,  the inefficient processes for waste collection and disposal need to be reformed in order to provide a better solution,” said Frank E. Celli, Chief Executive Officer of BioHitech America.

“The Massachusetts law banning food waste helps reduce the needs for landfills, decrease  greenhouse gasses, saves on disposal costs, and helps turn trash into vital resources needed  for the continued survival of our environment.”

Experts estimate that nearly 1,700 businesses in Massachusetts including hospitals, hotels,  grocery stores, restaurant chains, universities, etc. will be subject to the new ban.

“Massachusetts joins Vermont and Connecticut which already have imposed bans on the  disposal of food waste,” added Mr. Celli. “We are seeing this shift becoming a trend, upcoming  legislation has been passed to start in New York City in July 2015 and others will follow.  Sustainable alternatives are no longer just a social responsibility; they are becoming a  mandatory requirement.”

Every year, more than 34 million tons of food waste ends up in landfills that release harmful  methane gas into the environment. As landfills continue to run out of space and companies  continue to generate an excess of food waste, a growing number of jurisdictions are starting to  restrict or ban food waste from going to landfills.
